In the name of God the most Merciful and Gracious
The spirit must hold a special and superior position in our lives as this is a gift from the Almighty to its creation. God says in the Quran that He strengthens the believers with His spirit.
"..He has written faith in their hearts and strengthened them with a spirit from Himself and He will admit them to Gardens beneath which rivers flow..." (Quran - part of 58:22)
We can also say that the spirit is essentially pure and elevates humans to a level higher than is attainable without it.
The spirit is from God and to God it must return the human who is given the spirit of God not only finds strength from this but also has the unrelenting belief that one day the spirit will be returned to its Creator. This gift of spirit is distributed according to the individual yearning for the righteous path and purity of their soul. The soul is something we can and do control the spirit strengthens our beliefs which we must verify through our own soul first.
Whereas it is difficult to conceptualise what a spirit is we can say it is from God and represents part of Him in us. It is the constant link between the Creation and the Creator. It seems that everyone is given a form of consciousness which we use to make every day decisions and sometimes overcome this consciousness to make decisions we know are incorrect. The spirit is something that is 'gifted' to those individuals who first take the initial steps towards spiritual discovery through the guidance of ones vested conscious. Once an individual takes the conscious step towards the righteous path Divine guidance is handed down in the shape of the spirit. We may further infer that while the soul and body are inseparable as one cannot exist in this temporal world without the other the spirit as it essentially comes from without preserves the connection to the without (outside the physical body). While the primary purpose of the spirit is to enlighten us from within it also reveals to the highest spiritual self knowledge that is outside the bounds and comprehension of the self.
To God belongs knowledge of all things.
